Botel Marina had the greatest tourist traffic in 2014 in the hostel category with 10,424 arrivals and 15,312 overnight stays. Representative of the botel, Andrej Kušeta, expressed satisfaction with the success of this relatively small new project and believes that 2015 will bring even better results. The increase in the number of days of stay in Rijeka was noted in Botel Marina, too, and Kušeta emphasised that a significant role in this has been made by guests who come because of health tourism, dental to be exact, which is an area that should be developed further.
The mayor of the City of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel, had announced good news and excellent achievement in tourism results right from the start. Designed policy and direction which were developed jointly by the City of Rijeka and the Rijeka Tourist Board, hotels, hostels, private accommodation renters, event organisers, and various other subjects, have all given their contribution so that today we can say that, where preseason tourism results are concerned, Rijeka is the absolute champion in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. After the increase of 19% in tourist traffic in 2014, the positive trend continues this year, too, and what is also increasing is the number of days that guests stay in Rijeka, which can no longer be called only a transit city, because visitors are increasingly recognising the value of Rijeka and its surrounding area which need more than a single day’s attention.
Obersnel also commented on the very beginnings of increase in accommodation capacities in Rijeka, when in 2006 the City of Rijeka initiated the opening of the first hostel by offering a building to the Croatian Youth Hostel Association, to the present 13 hostels in Rijeka, a number which will soon increase by one when another opens in Pećine, due to tourists' increased demand for this type of accommodation. Private accommodation rental is blossoming, also – there were only a few until a couple of years ago, and today there are more than a 100 with occupancy on average from 80 up to more than 200 days a year, with Apartments Luana as the record holder with 236 occupancy days in a year.
Tourism is becoming one of the important economic activities in Rijeka, an activity from which not only the accommodation owners benefit, but also restaurateurs and shops, and many other activities are carried out accordingly – renewal of the Port of Rijeka, clearing out the areas by the sea, renewal of the Old Town, construction of sports facilities, which gives cause for satisfaction and proceeding in the same direction.
The director of the Rijeka Tourist Board, Petar Škarpa, presented the tourism figures achieved in 2014 and first quarter of 2015. Cumulative indicators of tourist traffic have shown that tourism in Rijeka progressed in 2014 in almost all segments compared to the year before. There was a significant increase in the number of arrivals and overnight stays of domestic and foreign guests, which is the result of many years of investment into the tourist destination by all tourism employees through extended contents and an attractive tourist offer of the city. Hotels were the dominant category of accommodation even the year before in the area of the City of Rijeka, and the trend of strong development of private accommodation and hostels was continued. In 2014, accommodation capacities increased by 10% in relation to 2013, and the number of 2,113 available beds grew to 2,322 beds in 2014.
After a record in tourist traffic in 2014 with 173,549 overnight stays and a growth rate of 19% at the annual level, the growth trend continued in the first quarter of 2015. There were 12,476 arrivals, which is 17% more than during the same period in 2014. The average stay of tourists in the city is also increasing – from the average stay of 1.91 days to 2.20 days.
This positive trend is a result of joint activities of the City of Rijeka, the Rijeka Tourist Board and all directly and indirectly involved subjects which make the tourist offer of the destination, but also a result of the Croatian National Tourist Board’s new project – Croatia 365 – which Rijeka is a part of, together with Opatija as one of the PPS, i.e. Croatia 365 destinations. Given the promising figures at the beginning of the year, a successful and a record summer is expected in Rijeka.
Luana Amura, a private accommodation renter with the biggest tourist traffic in 2014 with 1,275 arrivals and 2,282 overnight stays, who is also President of the Private Accommodation Renters Association of the City of Rijeka, was congratulated by Obersnel and Škarpa on achieved results. As a reason for the large number of overnight stays she stated numerous events such as the Rijeka Carnival, the CACIB dog show, Hairstyle News, etc. which fill capacities, beaches, especially beaches that allow dogs which mean a lot to some tourists, but also a good cooperation with the Rijeka Tourist Board, the Kvarner Family brand which promotes renters, and good cooperation among the renters. Guests often return to Rijeka, and a significant part of the promotion is done by personal recommendations of old guests to their friends and family. The Private Accommodation Renters Association of the City of Rijeka is looking forward to the increase in the number of renters, and hostels, too, which they believe will surely benefit everyone.
